Did you ever look in the windows of those grand department stores and wonder how they got their Christmas trees to look so perfect?

It's not nearly as difficult as it looks. And I'll share the secret here.

1. The tree - not that it matters a whole lot what the tree is, but my favorite tree is the fat rounded kind with branches that allow a bit of space between, but not so much that you can see through them. I love the smell of fresh pine. But in my particular case, with an allergy to pine, I find the most adorable fake tree I can find and make it look as much like a real tree as possible. I've even been known to tie pinecones to the branches as I wrap them with lights to make the tree appear more realistic.

2. The lights - Whatever kind of lights you choose, get enough to cover the tree well, but if you are going to add ornaments, you need less lights and more sparkle. I like to bury the lights just a bit inside the branches, so I add the lights as I put up the branches a couple of rounds per layer, so there's some depth to the tree, a few glowing lights hidden inside the branches. Wrapping the lights into the branches as you assemble the tree is great for a fake tree, but a real tree needs to have lights buried just inside the branches so you can stll see the ends of each light.

3. The garland - garland offers color and style to the tree. Add a garland that compliments your tree decorating style. After the lights are on, the tree is up, walk around the tree with the garland in your hand and drop generous swags of garland between the branches of the tree, allowing them to fall freely and gracefully. My favorite garlands are thin ribbon with a nice satin sheen to reflect the lights, beads, or for a natural look, some popcorn and dried berries strung on a thread. Jute or hemp lengths tied into loose bows at junctions make a nice natural drape on your natural or southwestern style tree.

4. The ornaments - A wide variety of ornaments depicting a specific theme work very well. My ornaments are mostly gold and white with some dark red or Christmas red and Navy blue thrown in for accent. I have angels, drummer boys, toy soldiers, glass orbs, stars, sleighs, a rocking horse or two, some crystal bells with carved ornaments inside, and some crystal ornaments with imprints of the nativity. When I look for ornaments, I look for things that say "Christmas" to me, and fit in the color scheme I've chosen for my tree.

Occasionally, my kids get the better of me and we use colored lights instead of white lights on the tree. Those years, anything goes on the tree branches, and we've done everything from stuffed animals and hot wheels cars hung in the tree to paper ornaments cut out of colored paper. Spirals, paper chains, and glued ornaments with glitter all go in our collection.

5. The topper - Whatever you want to put on top of your tree - make sure it's big enough to be seen. Our tree usually gets an angel or a star. I have a selection. My tree is 7 feet tall, and my star is well over a foot tall. My angel on the other hand is not so big, because she's always competing with the angels on the tree - so she can't be too huge.

If it's a color year, we make a new star out of colored paper or fabric and attach all kinds of shinys to it with glue. Last year, we had a bright yellow star with silver glitter and gold braid along the edges of a six pointed Star of David. It was awesome.

6. The tree skirt - Under it all you need something to hold the packages, and the finish it off. I have a white braid and ribbon skirt this year. It started out as a circle of cloth and I was just stitching some ribbon along the edge - I ended up with layers of ribbon spreading out around the base of my tree. The best part is, I don't have to put many presents under a tree that has a great skirt.

I've found a great adornment for my Christmas tree is a nativity that I can set under the edge of the branches, in plain sight. The star on top is a special touch - and the boughs of the evergreen protect it. Everyone notices the nativity under the tree, and I have a special place where children look and ask questions, so I can tell them the story of Jesus birth.

Of course, there's another nativity on an end table, another in my dining room, and another in each of the bedrooms, because I love nativities.

If you have a color scheme in your home that you would like to play off of, then that can make it even simpler. You can always find candles, ribbons, napkins, beads, etc. online or at the store. Add touches of winter greenery or tiny Christmas trees to solidify the look.

A Christmas wreath laid in the center of the table can be the beginning of a perfect centerpiece. It can be decorated with any object you may want to use as a theme. If you have no theme in mind other than something special, then ribbons and bows can always come to the rescue. Inside the wreath, place a large candle or several tapers. Years ago my father introduced me to a tradition that was able to bring peace into our relationship. My parents divorced when I was about ten years old and my Dad moved south, far away from me. We really didn't speak often as my parents had one of those horrendous divorces. I probably saw him a half a dozen times before heading to college in Burlington, VT.

Needless to say, we did not have much in common and frankly, I kept myself slightly aloof from him as he left long ago...During college he began making attempts to be a part of my life. He would take me skiing with my boyfriend, send money finally and call more often.

One memorial weekend he asked me if I would like to do the graves with him. Strangely enough that was one place we both liked to go - cemeteries. We both liked wandering around old graveyards reading headstones and admiring the artistry of the marble works.

My Dad grew up in Middlebury, VT. Most of that side of the family still lives there and our relatives are buried in several different cemeteries in the area. I agreed, not really knowing what I was getting into. He picked me up early that Sunday morning and I looked in the backseat to see all kinds of supplies - gardening tools, cups and to my surprise, chilled champagne.

We began chatting about where we were going first and my Dad started telling stories. He loves telling stories, but this time the stories were of friends he had lost in Vietnam, Uncles wounded in WWII and scandalous adventures of my family I never knew. I laughed, really laughed and I saw my father for the first time as more than the man that left.

He was flawed certainly, but he was trying. Trying to become a family again. I saw for the first time how young he was when my parents got married and I found compassion that was not there before.

At each grave we cleared away the weeds, and planted pansies and marigolds. We offered champagne toasts and funny stories to those long gone. Quietly, without knowing when, a gentle peace had slipped into my Dad and my relationship.

I finally had come to love my father again. I realized wasn't abandoned any longer. I had found my way back to him and this family through the memories and stories of those long past. That day, together, we found peace again in pansies and laughter. This peace has made all the difference and I am grateful.

Halloween is just around the corner, which means trick-or-treating, and I stress the "treating". Eliminating candy completely at Halloween is not a feasible option and why spoil a fun holiday the whole family should enjoy? However, by taking a few simple steps you can limit the amount of candy in your home and maintain a balance between holiday treats and your health goals.

• Are you throwing or attending a Halloween party? Limit the cookies/candy and aim for some traditional fall goodies, such as caramel covered apples, pumpkin dip and pumpkin bars, which are tasty treats that offer some good nutrition too. If you are the party host, plan some party activities that get guests up and moving - Monster Mash dance contest or a scarecrow building contest - to work off some of the holiday goodies while having a ghoulish good time.
• Limit the number of homes you take your children to for trick-or-treating. The fewer homes you visit, the less candy you take home.

This will limit the leftover candy you will be tempted to consume after the big night.
• Portion control is key. Watch how much you eat at a time. If you have a sweet tooth, keep the candy out of sight and limit yourself to one or two pieces each day.

Spooky decorations, creepy costumes and candy-filled visions spur kids - and often the entire family - into a fun-filled frenzy on Halloween. But don't let hidden dangers spoil the evening for your ghouls and booys! Here are ten simple Halloween safety and planning tips to help keep fright night from becoming a real scare.

10. Fill 'em up first: Send trick-or-treaters off with a full tummy so they won't be as tempted to eat candy before it's inspected.

When the leaves begin to turn color and fall from the trees children used to start thinking about that most exciting holiday, Halloween. You got to dress up as a cat or Batman or a princess and on top of that you could go outside on the cool or cold autumn evening and who knows what was waiting for you? Fast forward to today and the truth is Halloween is not just for children! Costumes were once the domain of kids but inevitably that changed for a variety of reasons. Candy is still a big part of Halloween but many complain that the kids just don't come around anymore. One reason is certainly that families are a lot smaller than they were a generation or two ago. Another is the permanent change brought about by sensational stories about poisoned candy and kidnappings of young children.

Costumes are for adults now and when you think about it Halloween has always been a pretty mature subject. The origin of Halloween is pretty scary even for adults. Halloween traces back to the Celtics who inhabited present day Ireland. November 1st was their New Years Day separating summer from winter and they believed that the line between life and death was blurred on the 31st of October and the time that the dead returned to Earth. Without going into a historical analysis suffice it to say that there was nothing child like and innocent about the origins of this Holiday. Different cultures had different traditions but many celebrate the day of the dead or all saints day to honor the dead, again no fairy tale characters here.

Early on the celebrations many sanctioned by the Catholic church involved dressing up as saints, angels and devils which were the precursors of the tradition of wearing costumes. The tradition evolved and many cultures do not celebrate Halloween. Perhaps it is only fitting that the U.S. has managed to celebrate this solemn time by wearing costumes of Star Wars characters, Presidents, alive and dead and of course the Texas Chainsaw Massacre character and Jason the undead. Adults now celebrate the holiday with little tricking or treating but parties, gatherings with music, alcohol and food and many suggest "simply another reason to have a party." Many if not most people have no idea what they are celebrating and why should they care. Unlike Christmas, Easter and the Fourth of July the meaning of Halloween is blurred and unfocused and likely to stay that way. Halloween, a holiday that used to celebrate the dead now celebrates life and in some cases debauchery.

Adults now have a wide range of choices of what to wear for Halloween. It seems that women more than men enjoy dressing up for the occasion. Why are women more inclined than men to dress up in silly, cute and suggestive costumes? Simplistically perhaps because women have been conditioned to be spectacles or object of desire more than men. Perhaps because in a male dominated society women have been conditioned by men to dress for the pleasure of men? These questions won't be answered here, but the truth is the variety of costumes for women dwarfs those for men by a ration of at least ten to one. What ever the reason women can dress up in the classic costumes such as the cheerleader, French maid and nurse. These are costumes that have evolved from occupations that women hold to this day although the costumes are generally not appropriate for wearing to work at the hospital. Men's costumes generally stick to the pirate, barbarian and other such manly figures.

Fortunately women's costumes now include a greater selection of plus size costumes in many, but not all of the characters available to missy sizes. Here as elsewhere in the fashion industry a controversy exists as to supply and demand and it is difficult to say who is to blame. Any woman who wears plus size will attest that the selection for plus size costumes is but a fraction of those offered to missy size girls. Manufacturers argue that plus size women simply don't but these costumes while many women argue that the selection is poor and the styles are limited. Regardless of the outcome of that controversy selection of plus size costumes is increasing slowly but surely. Woman of all sizes can and do wear the suggestive costumes but plus size women have been slower to embrace the trend for whatever reason.

Whether Halloween is a holiday that contains memories of a day gone by where children dominated the tradition or you grew up when the holiday transformed to a holiday for kids and adults equally the basic reason for the modern day holiday is to have fun and wearing costumes is a way to become another character whether it be superman or a suggestive Alice in Wonderland, just have fun!

Thanksgiving is traditionally a day when we invite our loved ones into our home and give thanks for all we have. But with Christmas and other holidays looming just around the corner, it sometimes can be tough on the budget to put out a beautifully decorated table. No problem, The Budget Decorator is here to help you create a tablescape for your home that represents your creativity, and gives you yet another thing to be thankful for....money saved!

1.Develop a theme. A natural for this time of year, is, well...natural! Use the beauty of nature and the harvest as even our ancestors did to provide a beautiful and delicious theme for your Thanksgiving feast.

2.Provide a backdrop to your table setting. You don't need fancy tablecloths for this day. Layer simply flat sheets, old bedspreads or quilts, and pretty fabric placemats all on the same table. Keep a solid color between each pattern, and it will shine!

3.Go all out setting your table! I DON'T mean run to your nearest department store and buy the best china. Nonsense. This day is about simpler things than that. I do mean use what you have, all of it, even if it doesn't match. Set out plates and salad dishes and soup bowls. Use all your glassware. Bring out separate forks for salad and main dish. Fold pretty fabric or paper napkins and place at each setting. Go to a craft site and find a little place card you can make out of materials on hand. Here's a secret: The more generous you are with your table settings, no matter what the nature of the plates and cups and silverware, the more festive and lavish the room appears!

4.Create a shimmering centerpiece out of natural materials! Bather 2 or three ceramic bowls, and fill them with nature finds...fir cones, acorns, nuts or seeds, even old potpourri! Nestle a pillar candle in each bowl, and set in the center of the table. Add a few pressed or silk fall leaves to the table around the bowls, and viola! Simple, elegant, and except for the candles(which you may have in your cupboard already) free! Never leave the candles unattended, and always make sure they will not burn down to or be blown into anything flammable.

5.Use a small pitcher from your cupboard to bring fresh flowers or branches of fall leaves to the table. Use in the center of your candle arrangement for height and interest.

6.Display pumpkins and gourds in the corners of the room, piled as they would in a barn. Add a few baskets to hold apples and pears, or smaller gourds and corn.

7.Invest in one roll of fall hue ribbon for your tablescape. Tie a bow to the back of each chair, wind ribbon over the table through the centerpieces. Even use it as tiebacks for the curtains!

Tie string on the top to hang them with and you have a beautiful, nature-made homemade Christmas tree ornament. Another pine cone idea is to make angels using the cone for the body. Just cut out some wings using paper or foils, add a head and a halo with a hot glue gun and decorate.

Homemade Christmas garland can be made with any number of things. Popcorn is probably the most common choice. There are many other things you can use though if you wanted to do something different. You can use any kind of food that won't go bad and that is soft enough to pull a string through, like certain types of dried beans, berries, candies or marshmallows. If you prefer not to use food items, you can use plastic or glass beads, or artificial flowers or just about anything you can think of that you can put a hole through.

I think we all have seen the gingerbread man ornaments. Just bake hard gingerbread cookies, decorate and hang from the tree with a string pulled through a hole punched in the cookie. Take different colored bottle caps and glue them together into different shapes with a hot glue gun. For instance, use one bottle cap for the middle, and glue the others around it in a circle. You can then use cotton, glitter, beads or anything you'd like to make a pretty ornament. With the light bulbs you can make Rudolph or snowmen! For Rudolph, paint the bulb brown or wrap it in brown felt. Glue on a red pom-pom for the nose, glue on or color on a mouth, some googly eyes, and some cut-out antlers. Tie a string around the top to hang it with and you have Rudolph! Use cotton balls or white felt material to make a snowman! Just glue them onto the bulb, add a cotton ball or another piece of felt material for the head and decorate as you'd like. You can even do angels or Santas! With a little imagination, you can make lots of beautiful glass ornaments with recycled light bulbs.

Do you have a lot of plain, glass ornaments but you want to spruce up your tree a little this year? Take the top off of your plain bulbs and swirl some acrylic paint on the inside! You can use a brush, or just put a few drops of paint inside and swirl it around by tilting the glass ornament around. Add some glitter if you like. Let dry and replace the cap. Another great idea for clear glass ornaments is to put pictures inside. One of my favorite gifts I ever received was a picture a relative had taken of my child inside one of these ornaments. They just put the photo inside, recapped the ornament, and tied some ribbon around the top. It's a beautiful addition to my tree every year! These make great homemade Christmas gifts! They're easy, inexpensive, and will be kept as keepsakes for years to come.

Snowglobes have intrigued the hearts of men and women as far back as I can remember. And why wouldn't they? Not only are they creative, they all seem to take on their own life and lavishness. Just one little shake and you can't help but be hooked.

But I wouldn't bring you over here just to hear a story about a snowglobe would I?

So what is this about?

At Christmas time, consumerism abounds promising happy hearts for young and old alike who make this or that special product the gift of Christmas. Heartwarming Christmas movies become the box office attraction for movie goers all over the world. TV takes its annual holiday classics to the masses and advertising moguls flood our eyes and emotions with enchanted commercials that would even melt the heart of Frosty with their warmth. And who can overlook those wonderful Christmas carols that serenade us everywhere we go.

"May all your Christmases be white," one carol states.

It seems the world is alive with the magic and aglow with a spell of enchantment.

I have one word for all this.

SNOWGLOBE!

You ever notice when you shake a snowglobe that you can't help but get lost in its solemnness and elegance. Snow has never looked so pretty and peace on earth seems to be reflected in each flake that falls. Sometimes you just want to crawl inside and lose yourself in its panorama of tranquility.

"If life were only like this snowglobe,"

one can't help but reason.

I wonder if this was a little of what Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was feeling when he penned the poem that became the song, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"? Wrestling with the loss of his wife a couple years prior in a house fire, the crippling wounding of his son in the American Civil War that still raged as he heard the bells that Christmas day so long ago and took up his pen to write,

"I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor does He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men."

If we are not careful, we can become convinced that the message of Christmas is all about making life for us like a snowglobe.

It isn't, you know?

The message of Christmas is really about the chaos we all want to escape, not in the snowglobe enchantment we all seem to chase this time of year. When you think about it, scripture tells us that Jesus had the snowglobe, but He crawled out of it to enter our chaos.

The next time you get swept away in the magic, remember the real message of Christmas. It's about God entering our world in all its chaos, not its enchantment. When you shut out all the noise this time of year and hear the sounds of bleeding, broken and lonely hearts all around you reminding you of this, you are now seeing Christmas as it was meant to be seen.

It was not an enchanting castle where Christ would be wrapped in robes of royalty that He chose for His bed that first Christmas night, it was a stable and a meager manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes.

Doesn't sound much like a snowglobe, does it? But then, neither does our lives.

The show features three main characters: Ben Tennyson, his cousin Gwen, and their grandfather Max. The show opens up with Ben and Gwen getting into an argument. Ben then angrily marches off into the woods. While there, he finds a pod on the ground. Upon examination, he notices that a watch-like machine (Omnitrix) is stored inside.

This machine attaches to his arm, and allows him to change into the form of various aliens. Each alien possesses its own special power. The theme behind why the Omnitrix possesses this power is that the creator, Azmuth, designed it so that different species could understand each other better. As Ben gains mastery of the Omnitrix, it is eluded that it increases in size as Ben gains mastery of it (using Ben 10000 as an example).

The first series ended in April of 2008, but the sequel, "Ben 10: Alien Force" picked up immediately after the first series ended. In the sequel, Ben and Gwen appear more mature and proficient in their powers.

Why would my kids want to be Ben 10 this Halloween?

If I were a child, I think I would be in awe that I could turn into all sorts of different aliens with different abilities. My imagination would be running a mile a minute! I would be imagining up adventures for my friends and I to experience in the backyard or in the garage. It would only be natural for them to want to dress like Ben 10 this Halloween so that they can model after their favorite hero! Why would my kids not want to be Ben 10?

We ordered this for Halloween becuase my daughter was very excited about the notion of being Stephanie. The dress is adequate, but slightly flimsy. It really does not look like the picture besides the pink color. The headband is placed sort of at the bottom of the bangs, and the bangs are all over the place. All in all it is an okay costume... (I know better than to expect perfection)...but it is not really worth the money. I give it two stars because my daughter is happy.

Customer Review: Very cute- but runs small
This costume is very cute and looks just as pictured. But I'm glad I knew Halloween costumes tended to run small and this one is no exception. I am usually a size M in ladies and ordered an XL. It fit, but quite snugly. Also it is VERY short. I realize that is the style of the 70s but I had to wear a black skirt with it in order to feel comfortable. But the print is bright and fun.

May is the time to honor and thank mothers, grandmothers, and just-like-a-mom women in your circle of family and friends for all that they do in raising children. Thumbprint Note Cards

Cut a piece of paper to desired size (5 inches by 4 inches is a nice size) and fold in half. Have children place thumb or finger in a stamp pad and make 5 or 6 thumb or fingerprints on front of card. Draw stems and leaves with a green crayon or marker. Extension: Make 5 or 6 cards, tie together with a ribbon, and give as Mother's Day present.

Hugs and Kisses

Provide children each with a small wooden or cardboard box. Have them paint their box. After the box is dry, let them decorate the box with markers, stickers, sequins, glitter, etc. Next, have children shred some paper (use a variety of colors) and fill the box with it. Have them add some Hershey's Kisses, Hugs, or other candy. Finally have children attach the following poem to the box and then give it to their Mom for Mother's Day.

Decorative Soap

Cut a piece of felt, decorative paper, or fabric to fit around a bar of soap. Wrap the material around the soap and glue. Let dry. Decorate the top and sides of the bar of soap with small silk flowers, ribbon, lace, sequins, beads, etc.

Heart Pendant

Mix together one cup flour, one cup warm water, one-fourth cup salt, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, one teaspoon oil, and a few drops of food coloring. Roll out dough. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes. Poke a hole at the top of the heart big enough to thread yarn or ribbon through. Let dry. Paint heart. Spread a thin layer of glue on heart and sprinkle with glitter. Add sequins or small beads if desired. Thread the yarn or ribbon. Wrap in tissue paper or gift wrap.

Mother's Day Party

Mother's Day is a great reason to have a party with family and close friends. Get everyone together for a breakfast, picnic, brunch, garden party or barbecue. Include friends who are close to your mom if they are not celebrating with their own family, or combine the celebrations to honor all of the moms, grandmothers and just-like-a-mom women in your circle of family and friends.
